For too long, the Malaysian media landscape has been dominated by heavy-handed government regulation through the Publication and Printing Presses Act 1984. Civil society and media organisations have since lobbied the government to move towards a model of industry self-regulation, rather than allow the law to be abused for political gain.

With a reform-minded government in power who intends to repeal oppressive laws, the time is ripe to begin discussions again on establishing a National Media Council of Malaysia.

The Upcoming Consultation

3-5 March 2019

The National Consultation will take place between 3 to 5 March 2018 in Kuala Lumpur/Petaling Jaya, subject to venue availability. The agenda is being shaped to include both formal discussions and open-format interactions over a two day period.

We intend to secure the participation of senior government stakeholders as well as government stakeholders and relevant media governance-related policy-makers for high-level engagement.

Journalists, media practitioners, content creators, civil society organisation representatives and community representatives are welcome to attend and shape the discussion towards the media council Malaysia deserves.

MEET WITH US

In the run-up to the National Consultation, CIJ is looking to meet and discuss with as many diverse stakeholders as possible to gather feedback on: (1) shaping the format and agenda of the national consultation; (2) hearing out your opinions on the aspects of the media council.

Specifically, we would like to meet with any media practitioners and representatives of organisations, academics, members of political parties, religious organisations or any others with an interest in a responsive and responsible media. We are reaching out to as many people as possible, but would like to get input from those we haven’t been able to reach.
